Artificial Intelligence to replace 69% of the manager’s workload by 2024: Gartner

Mumbai :  Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies such as virtual personal assistants and chatbots will replace almost 69 percent of the manager’s workload by 2024, according to a prediction by research and advisory firm Gartner on Thursday. “The role of the manager will see a complete overhaul in the next four years,” Helen Poitevin, research vice-president at Gartner, said in a statement. “Currently, managers often need to spend time filling in forms, updating information and approving workflows. By using AI to automate these tasks, they can spend less time managing transactions and can invest more time in learning, performance management, and goal setting,” Poitevin said. AI and emerging technologies will undeniably change the role of the manager and will allow employees to extend their degree of responsibility and influence, without taking on management tasks. Application leaders focused on innovation and AI is now accountable for improving worker exper...

Scientists discovered four new species of sharks that walk

While  great whites  haunt the deep, walking sharks are content to scuttle in the shallows. They’ve been walking, or something close to it, for at least 9 million years. They’re evolutionary superstars, too: Walking sharks could be the most recently evolved shark on Earth. That’s according to findings published this week in  Marine and Freshwater Research . Shark scientists spent years sampling the DNA of the only known walking shark species to estimate when they evolved. They found four new species while they were at it. The youngest species might’ve evolved less than 2 million years ago. And by evolutionary standards, that’s recent — and a major contradiction to the widely held belief that sharks are slow to evolve. “The discovery proves that modern sharks have remarkable evolutionary staying power and the ability to adapt to environmental changes,” said Mark Erdmann, the paper’s co-author and Conservation International Vice President of Asia-Pacific marine ...

Naval Station Great Lakes placed on lockdown as officials search for 'gate runner'

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill.  -  Naval Station Great Lakes  was placed on lockdown Friday morning due to a vehicle entering the base without providing credentials. Someone drove up to the front gate about 7:09 a.m. and passed by a security officer without stopping, according to Naval Station Great Lakes spokesman John Sheppard. “They didn’t bother to show an ID and continued driving through the gate,” he said. The station is on lockdown as officials search for the intruder.  It was unclear how many people were inside the vehicle. The naval station  posted on Facebook  that all gates are closed and personnel are ordered to take cover. Sergeant Christopher Covelli with the Lake County Sheriff's Office released this statement on the lockdown: "We are told there is no known threat to anyone outside of the base. It was reported to us someone crashed into an entrance gate. Unknown if was intentional." Naval Station Great Lakes is located on abou...

University Of Wisconsin-Platteville Students Screened For Coronavirus At O’Hare After Returning From Wuhan, China

CHICAGO (CBS)  — A group of University of Wisconsin-Platteville students passed through O’Hare International Airport after returning to the U.S. from Wuhan, China – and they were being watched Thursday night for coronavirus. UW-Platteville said Thursday that six students arrived on campus Tuesday after traveling recently to Wuhan. Two of the six students live in Wuhan, the university said. According to CBS affiliates in  Milwaukee  and  Madison , UW-Platteville officials said the two Wuhan residents were  screened at O’Hare. None of the six students have shown signs of coronavirus infection, but their temperatures are being taken regularly as a precaution. They are currently living together in one residence hall, but are not under quarantine or isolation, the university said. The outbreak started in Wuhan, population 11 million. China has moved to lock down at least three major cities in an effort to contain the virus. O’Hare  this week offic...

East Texas researcher seeks to find cure for coronavirus

Image
EXARKANA, Texas (KTAL) – A researcher in Texarkana is searching for a cure after a new form of the coronavirus outbreak in China makes its way to the United States. Dr. Ben Neuman, a member of the coronavirus naming committee, said this virus does not have an official name yet, but people are referring to it as the “Wuhan coronavirus.” Viruses like this one start with people who work in the animal market, and spread by not taking precautions with cleanliness. “Now as far as spread in America I think the only people who are at risk right now are going to be the doctors and nurses watching that one person up in Washington State,” said Dr. Neuman. According to Dr. Neuman, it is considered a “slow virus,” meaning it can take up to a week before people show symptoms. So far, lab results confirmed 500 people have been affected and a total of 16 people have died. “With this virus, it’s still small right now. And because it’s slow we’re only just now seeing the people who got infect...

Fish oil supplements tied to improved male fertility

A new study has suggested that men who consume fish oil supplements, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids, might get a boost in fertility. The researchers, in a study published in  JAMA Network Open,  after examining data from nearly 1,700 young men suggested that fish oil supplement consumption was associated with a higher sperm count, larger testes and improved levels of hormones that contribute to male fertility. The study co-author, Prof Tina Jensen, said, “While all men could benefit from adding omega-3 fatty acids to their diets, the biggest impact would be in those with poor sperm quality. That is because these types of fatty acids are essential to fertility, Jensen said in an email. “The composition of the sperm cell membrane with rich fatty acid content is critical for proper sperm function. The sperm cell membrane plays a critical role in the key fertilisation events. Omega-3 in the sperm membrane increases as the sperm matures and it cannot be synthes...

New technique predicts reliability of risk models

After a patient has a heart attack or stroke, doctors often use risk models to help guide their treatment. These models can calculate a patient's risk of dying based on factors such as the patient's age, symptoms, and other characteristics. While these models are useful in most cases, they do not make accurate predictions for many patients, which can lead doctors to choose ineffective or unnecessarily risky treatments for some patients. Every risk model is evaluated on some dataset of patients, and even if it has high accuracy, it is never 100 percent accurate in practice. There are going to be some patients for which the model will get the wrong answer, and that can be disastrous." Collin Stultz,  professor of electrical engineering and computer science, MIT Stultz is a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Stultz and his colleagues from MIT, the MIT-IBM AI Lab, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School have now developed a method that all...

Vaping Is the Darling of Instagram

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 22, 2020 (HealthDay News) --  Vaping  has been deemed hazardous for your health by public officials across America, but you wouldn't know it by scrolling through Instagram. Instead, researchers discovered that Instagram posts that promote use of the devices outnumber anti- vaping  content by a shocking ratio of 10,000 to 1. Nearly one-third of U.S.  teens  use e-cigarettes. In 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration launched a campaign to discourage vaping among youth, according to authors of the study published Jan. 22 in the journal  Frontiers in Communication . "U.S. public health officials have been calling  vaping  among youth an epidemic and have been putting a lot of effort into trying to stop this epidemic by introducing #TheRealCost anti-vaping campaign," said researcher Julia Vassey, from the University of California, Berkeley. "But this stark imbalance in the volume of posts has caused the FDA message to be...
